2008 Chaplains’ Conference and Families’ Retreat

This letter is to announce the Chaplains’ Conference and Families’ Retreat that will be held at Bonclarken Conference Center, Hendersonville, NC (near Asheville), from 8-11 July, 2008.   Events begin with a group dinner on the evening of Tuesday, 8 July and conclude with breakfast on Friday, 11 July.

This year’s our speaker is an old friend.  Rev. Dr. Bill Carl, III, is the president of Pittsburgh Presbyterian Seminary and the brother in law of our own Army Chaplain Carl Thompson.  He’s well aware of how the chaplaincy is being tested by deployments, war, and the courts and will bring messages of challenge and encouragement.  Look for some lively discussion with spouses fully involved.

The guest preacher for our three evening vespers services is our own Council Member and Air Force veteran, Rev. Dr. Marcel Johnson.  He is also  a pastor of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in America, brings a life-time of experience and insight to share with us in worship.

Many of you have not had the opportunity to attend one of our annual conferences/retreats, please consider this a priority this year!  Mark your calendars now.  All lodging and meal costs are borne by the Presbyterian Council for Chaplains and a small amount of money is available for a limited number of travel scholarships (please let us know if you need a little help to travel.)  Arrangements can be made to pick you up if you are flying and arriving at Asheville airport (12 miles from Bonclarken).

We have scheduled the event for presentations in the mornings, with the afternoons left free for family time.  There is much to do in the immediate area, from hiking around Chimney Rock, local waterfalls and trails, to touring Biltmore Mansion or the home of Carl Sandberg.  Bonclarken has an outdoor pool, lake and canoes.  Accommodations are in hotel-type rooms, each with private bath.  Two rooms/baths or apartments are available for larger families.  Our children and teens are invited to participate in the day-time activities of Camp Bonclarken.

We do ask for a “Commitment Fee” of $50.00 per chaplain/family.  This is one fee, regardless if you are attending solo, or with a large family.  Solo spouses of deployed chaplains are strongly encouraged to come and bring the kids!!  So sign up now!!

(Note:  Is space becomes constrained, priority will be given to active duty and currently or recently deployed reserve component families.  Retirees will be asked to pay the actual cost of the retreat and not the greatly subsidized amount charged to serving chaplains.)

Most cordially,

Edward T. Brogan, Director
